LAND OF THE BUFFALO

28"x22" acrylic on canvas

This is another painting from my Brookfield Zoo reference photos. It was a challenging painting with so much detail in the Buffalo. I also used my imagination a bit to create the background. This was a so much fun to paint and I learned a lot from it. Below is my original reference and a few close ups.

  1. This painting is just wonderful. You really got all the colors, values, nuances of the scraggly fur. I enjoyed each step, seeing your stages. Today I loved it even more to realize that it was from the Brookfield Zoo. When I was very small we lived in a suburb of Chicago and went to the zoo often. My family moved to another state more than 45 years ago and your mention of it brought images back from my memory bank!

    1. Thank you so much for the comments Pam! I am glad you like the painting and that you enjoyed seeing the progress. It really does help me to see my work in process on fb and to hear what my fellow artists and friends think.

What a small world that you used to live in the Chicago area. So cool. I am glad my painting and Brookfield Zoo was able to bring back some memories for you!

  2. Excellent work, Brad! Love the natural setting you've given them...free once more(even if only in a painting).
I used to paint a lot of buffalo a few years back. Great subjects! I really like the textures you've shown.
